(a) Where the form of child maltreatment reported is abandonment or constitutes an aggravated circumstance as defined in this chapter, the director shall immediately initiate an investigative assessments pursuant to C.C. section 7B-302 and shall take steps to secure an order for emergency custody of the child.
(b) When the report alleges abandonment and due diligence cannot determine who the natural parents are, the investigative assessment shall include a request from the director of human services to law enforcement officials to investigate through the Federal and North Carolina Center for Missing Persons and other national and State resources to determine whether the child is a missing child.
